Give monthly allowance to war veterans — Masing

KUCHING: Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) president Tan Sri Dr James Masing is of the view that the sacrifices made by Sarawak Rangers and

Iban Trackers to safeguard the sovereignty of the country is very significant and deserves special recognition from the government.

Masing, who is Land Development Minister, suggests that a token of appreciation in the form of a monthly allowance of whatever amount the government deems fit should be considered for surviving veterans or the widows of those killed during the
war.

“Many of them who are still around today are already very old and such an allowance of course would be of great help to them. For those who have passed away the monetary token then should be paid to their widows,” he added.

He said the exact number of Sarawakians involved in fighting the communists in Malaya in the 50s was unknown but he believes the Ministry of Defence has the record.

“I was informed by officials from the ministry that the list of widows, trackers and Sarawak Rangers is being compiled and we are very grateful for that and hopefully the government will consider giving financial assistance to those who still survive and also to widows of the fallen heroes,” said Masing.

According to him, the amount of financial assistance was secondary as long as it was a gesture of appreciation and that they were remembered by the government because they had left behind their families and loved ones when they were sent to Malaya in the 50s, with many not making it home because they were killed.

The dead were buried in various places in peninsula Malaysia and Singapore, with some untraced until today.

Recently, the remains of 21 of such warriors were exhumed from the original graveyards and reburied at the Heroes Graves here on July 29.
