‘Tan Sri’ Title On Dayak Leaders A Recognition For Community
Borneo Post, June 8, 2011

SIBU: The conferment of the ‘Tan Sri’ title on two prominent Dayak political leaders and a Dayak corporate leader by the King last Saturday is seen as recognition of the contribution of the Dayak community towards nation-building.

The three are Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party (SPDP) president Tan Sri William Mawan Ikom, Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) president Tan Sri Dr James Jemut Masing and Tan Sri Leonard Linggi Tun Jugah.

Mawan is also the Minister of Social Development and Urbanisation while Masing is the Minister of Land Development.

Linggi is a past president and advisor of Dayak Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Kapit MP Datuk Alexander Nanta Linggi who met reporters here yesterday said for the two party presidents, the award of the title “is a very valuable recognition of the Dayak’s role in the country’s politics”.

“It is timely, and they deserve it. It is also a sign that the government appreciates the Dayaks’ efforts in bringing progress for the Dayak community to be on par with other communities.

“On behalf of all the Dayaks in the state and Sarawakians everywhere, I would like to congratulate them,” he said. Linggi is Nanta’s father.

On the title received by his father, Nanta said it would be a motivation to those not in politics as Linggi is actively involved in preserving and promoting Iban culture and tradition through his Tun Jugah Foundation.

“This also serves as a reminder to Dayaks that everyone can be useful in their own community,” he said.

On Saturday, Mawan, Masing and Linggi received their ‘Panglima Setia Mahkota’ award which carries the title ‘Tan Sri’ together with 34 other recipients from Yang Di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin.
