Every right to be disappointed
Masing: Eligible former Sarawak Rangers should receive the RM3,000 one-off payment too
By SHARON LING, The Star, Sunday February 12, 2012

KUCHING: The Government should look into the claims of former Sarawak Rangers that not all of them received a gratuity upon completing their service.

Those who were not paid a gratuity should be eligible to receive the RM3,000 one-off payment under Budget 2012, PRS president Tan Sri Dr James Masing said.

“If it is the case that not all of them were paid a gratuity, then those who did not receive the gratuity should be entitled to the RM3,000 special payment like the rest of the security forces. The Government should look into it and see if what they claim is correct. We have to be fair to them,” he told The Star yesterday.

He was commenting on the disappointment of former Sarawak Rangers over Deputy Defence Minister Datuk Dr Abdul Latiff Ahmad’s explanation that they were ineligible for the special payment because they received a gratuity after completing their service.

Sarawak Rangers Veterans Associa-tion pro tem secretary-general Capt (R) Mohd Johari Ibrahim had responded that not all Rangers were paid a gratuity at the end of their service.

Masing said he sympathised with the former Rangers and felt that they had a legitimate reason to be disappointed.

“The Rangers also played their part in defending the country. We are here today because of their services in the past. They deserve to be given the special payment like the other members of the security forces,” he said.

In Budget 2012, Prime Minister Tan Sri Najib Tun Razak had announced the special payment of RM3,000 for Emergency-era servicemen, including home guards, special constables, extra police constables, auxiliary police, women auxiliary police, women special constables and border scouts.
